The founder of the Transcendental Meditation Organisation was Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He taught and promoted his training program to millions of people across the globe. This kind of meditation originated from the Vedic tradition in India several thousands years ago. Its teachings were transferred orally from teacher to student and further on.
Nowadays, it is taught one-on-one by certified teacher. It is practiced for 20 minutes twice a day with no specific sitting posture and with the eyes being closed. The spontaneous way of our minds path is something that needs to be followed without any effort. Also, on this path, we dont use our senses, perceptions and experiences. It relies on the natural way of our mind to reach more quieter and pleasurable levels and, at one point to transcend them and experience the pure consciousness or in other words, the source of everything. This is also the space of a deep rest and all possibilities.
Practicing this technique does not involve high concentration, focus, any kind of belief systems or mindfulness. In scientific terms, it is called automatic self-transcending and it is associated with the production of the alpha brain waves that make us alert, but restful at the same time. There are many studies that show the health and well-being benefits of different types of meditations and it is also the case with the mentioned one. It improves the connections between the front and back, right and left brain. It reduces the stress hormones such as cortisol, increases the happiness hormones and improves the memory, problem solving and decision making.
Many meditations use the specific mantras in order to keep our mind focused. Transcendental Meditation uses mantras or pleasing sounds without any meaning. In this way, our mind wont be occupied with the meaning of the word or phrase because it means more activity to it. Thoughts and mind are seen as the movements, but they can lead us to the source of stillness. Then, our mind goes to a quieter and subtler states, bit by bit. At one point, it reaches the silence and we feel so much bliss, relaxation and peace. It transcends our being and awareness and reaches the unlimited awareness.
When our mind is calm and peaceful, we reach its long time forgotten state, too. We come to our true nature where peace, harmony and love always reside in. We breathe, live, dream, sleep and create consciously, effortlessly and joyously.
